Closer to Nowhere by Ellen Hopkins

Rating: 5 stars

It is about a boy named Cal who lives in his cousin Hannah's home after his father gets arrested and his mother dies. He and Hannah must learn to live with each other. Cal, or Clavin, is a 12-year-old boy who is dealing with trauma. he is emotionally scared and can fuse quickly; he is also book and street smart. Hannah is a 12 year old girl who can be easily annoyed, but she can understand some things deep down and can understand Cal's trauma. She is also very athletic and sporty.

It does remind me of another book by the same author called "What About Will," But it is about a younger brother who is trying to cover up for his brother, who has done bad things. I did like this book, but even though it is Middle-Grade rated, it is not for the faint-hearted. It dives into extremely deep topics at times.

I do like its cover. It shows Cal preaching on the roof on Hannah's roof with a paper airplane and Hannah looking up at Cal. It does convey one part where Cal reveals that he goes to the roof often.

At times, you will end up hating one character and loving the other, or you will hate both. They both do annoying things to each other. Nonetheless, it is a good book, and I will recommend it to people who enjoy realistic fiction.
